Nice set of shots, Frank.
I have been to that location several times, but I have never seen a Burrowing Owl there. I will have to keep my eyes open the next time I visit that location.

I too will be out there again looking for the burrowing owls. Have you tried Deer Park Road? We went out there a few weeks ago but didn't see any. We also spent some time at MLB airport but no luck there either. I have a friend who showed me some burrowing owl photos taken on Duda property somewhere in the vicinity of the MIT access road. He was fortunate to know a Brevard County Agricultural deputy who took him to their location. Since Deer Park road is closed from SR 192 we took Nova road to access Deer Park road ... the love bugs were horrendous.

Since Deer Park road is closed from SR 192 we took Nova road to access Deer Park road ... the love bugs were horrendous. I first went to the MIT Parking Lot area several years ago because I had read that Burrowing Owls were there. After all these years, I have never seen any of the owls there. There was a Brevard County Sheriffs wildlife officer that used to patrol that area but I think he is retired now (at least I have not seen him for a couple of years now). At any rate I was talking with him one day and I asked about the Burrowing Owls. He told me that in the past there was a large herd of cattle around the MIT Parking Lot area, and the Burrowing Owls stayed around them as they provided protection from predators. At some point the Duda ranchers moved the herd to another location and thereafter the Owls left the area.
How long ago did your friend get his photos of the Burrowing Owls?

The deputy you knew is Gene Hope, a very nice person, and he is retired. I'm guessing the MIT burrowing owl photos were taken around 2010 - 2012 by Rick Gaskins, who graduated from SHS in 1968 and was the manager at Southern Photo when he showed me the photos (2011 -2012). Rick has a brother Steve who graduated SHS in 1966 with us. I don't know if Gene Hope was the deputy who took Rick to see the owls.
