A wet Opossum that swam across a canal west of the Viera Wetlands. They look ugly and aggressive but are harmless. A couple in interesting facts about the Opossum......... Any mammal can get rabies. However, the chance of rabies in an opossum is EXTREMELY RARE as they seem to have a natural immunity to the disease. This may have something to do with the opossum’s low body temperature (94-97º F) making it difficult for the virus to survive in an opossum’s body. Opossums are immune to all types of snake venom in the United States, except that of the coral snake.
