As many of you know, I love photographing the Eastern Screech Owl. In years past my next door neighbor had a gigantic Ear Tree and an equally large Mulberry Tree. Both of those trees had numerous natural cavities that were utilized by Screech Owls for nesting, so I always had the little owls in my back yard to photograph. A few years ago, those two trees were cut down, and as a result I don't have as many Screech Owls visiting my yard. I have been thinking of placing some Screech Owl nesting boxes in my yard to see if I could attract more of them to photograph. Several companies have them for sale, but they cost from $30 to over $50 which is a lot of money for something that will be destroyed by the weather. In researching the cost of Screech Owl nesting boxes offered commercially, I discovered that posted on line are several plans for building your own nest box. One of many plans I found is this one (a pdf file) Screech Owl Nest Box (and American Kestrel too).
