Got this e-mail from Nancy Corona at MINWR this morning. If anyone interested!!!
Hi Everyone:
The photo club will be now meeting
on the fourth Thursday of the month at 2 pm. When the sequestration
restrictions lift the meeting with go back to the original time of 6 pm.
Nature photographer Joel Reynolds has graciously offered
to organize a field trip to the Cocoa landfill. Please see his message
below:
Hello everyone!!! How about on this coming
Thursday afternoon (April 25, 2013; 3:30 PM to about 5:30 PM), instead of going
to the Refuge, join me and a representative of our County Landfill in Cocoa
to get a "familiarization and photography tour" of what your Brevard County
Landfill is all about?! With the Landfill Safety Director leading us, we
will learn about it and stop at various locations along the way
to take pictures of birds and any other wildlife we might see. The
Landfill is about 2 miles square, with a "mountain" in the middle plus
pristine lakes on all sides. We should be able to see Bald Eagle,
Woodstork, Turkey and Black Vulture, Cattle Egret, White Ibis and others.
And, hopefully we will try and get close enough for a zoom lens like 100mm to
400mm to catch all we want. Not sure you will want a tripod, but that is
your choice - we'll try to shoot with a fast shutter speed instead - and hope we
might catch some birds in flight.
To get to the Landfill, from I 95, take exit 202,
SR 524, West one mile to Adamson Road. Proceed two miles North on Adamson
and go into the second entrance on the left. Go to the Operations
Building, on the right, and Jean and I will meet you there. We will be
limited to 5 cars total, so be prepared to carpool once there. And we all will
sign a Limit of Liability form for the Landfill. Oh, there are very nice
bathrooms there also.
I look forward to seeing you there!! Please
let me know at joelr@cfl.rr.com if you
will be coming, or at my home phone 321-267-1722. I promise you this
Landfill is not what you might think it is ----- you'll see.
Call me for any questions!!!
Also, please read the message below from Jean Kinzalow of the Brevard County Solid Waste Management Department.
Field trip to the County landfill at Cocoa.
This
is an at-your-own-risk activity which is why we have the waiver. We cannot and
do not cover visitors. Those who wish to participate must be of sufficient
health, mobility, and stamina to engage in this activity. They need to bring
and wear the proper clothing and footwear. They need to be able to hear and be
willing follow directions. We will do all we can to insure the safety of our
guests which is why we have instituted a procedure, but we assume no
liability.
