Nothing is forever..... Soon, our forum software will be upgraded to the new ProBoards v5 which has been under development for 5 years now. When I first set up this forum in 2008, it was under version 3, and shortly thereafter it was upgraded to version 4. Now, Proboards has made the following announcement "We are proud to announce that on ProBoards v5 will officially be launched on April 29th, 2013! Our next generation forum software comes with thousands of improvements and enhancements to your forum experience." Starting on January 28th, all forum admins can optionally choose to upgrade their forum to ProBoards v5. There is nothing for you to do. After the upgrade, you will log in as normal, but the software will take you to a new sign-in page where you login using your e-mail address. Just follow the simple instructions. Some of the coding I have used on the forum may not work under the new software and I may have to make some changes, but it has to do with the "look and feel" of the forum, not it's functionality. Do you want to see what it will look like, and try it out?A temporary copy of this forum has been created where we can test the new forum software. It is at ira.freemessageboards.com/Anything posted there will not show up on our live FORUM, so you are free to try out the new features. The BETA test site will be deleted soon.

Looks like the Software update to Proboards Version 5 will be sooner than I expected. As I understand it, I can choose to upgrade this forum to ProBoards v5 on or about January 22, 2013. After the software is updated, it will only take me a few minutes to configure the forum and then we will be on our way.......... Don't worry, there is nothing for you to do. After the upgrade, you will be viewing the forum as a guest, and will not be not be logged in. You will log in as normal, but the software will take you to a new sign-in page where you login using your e-mail address on a secure Proboards server. Just follow the simple instructions. Good News - Under Version 5, No one, not even the administrator of this forum can see your E-mail address thus you are more secure. I think you are going to like this major upgrade to the forum.

Ira: Will the old threads come over too? I go back quite frequently to look at Ask Old Ned to see what you and Ned say.

Are you ready for the software upgrade?
The upgrade will happen on or about Tuesday January 22, 2013.
Since establishing this forum back in 2008, we have had a large number of users who registered for the forum but have never posted a single message or reply to a message on the forum. In anticipation of the software upgrade on Tuesday of next week, I have cleaned up our members list by deleting the accounts of those members that have never posted a message on the forum, which could make the upgrade a little faster. Any member that was deleted can of course re-register after the upgrade.
If you have any questions about the upgrade, let me know........

Well, did I catch you off guard with upgrading the Forum?
I had some members of Proboards help me with the contest they had for early upgrading to Version 5. They helped me get some more points which allowed me to upgrade today as opposed to Tuesday. If you have any problems, let me know.........

Stopped by earlier and wondered why the new look did not include any birds on the masthead. I see that things were still being worked on then.
Looks nice.

Yes, after the software upgrade there were several things I had to do to get the forum up and running. I placed the forum in maintenance mode for about 30 minutes so that I could accomplish those tasks. I may have to make a few more changes in the future, but for now we are back up and running.......

, Some of you may have noticed that the drop down "Smiley" box did not look right. The box was wider than the message edit screen, the smileys were not lined up properly, and in some cases you could not see all of the smileys. This morning I added some computer code to the forum to correct this bug. If you should notice any other bugs, let me know about them.

Looks great Ira! Will there be (or is there) spell check & preview for posts & replys? As to spell check, I have my browser check my spelling. A spell check may be added in the future biased on some messages I have seen on the Proboards Support site. Spellcheck wasn't included in Version 5 because both Firefox and Chrome have built in spell checkers that you can enable from within the browser settings. For IE, you can install the IESpell plugin. As to a preview, it is no longer needed because we now have a WUSIWYG message editor. Look at the bottom left of the message editor box, and you will see two buttons. One says BBCODE (which is what you used in the old software) and the second is VISUAL. If you compose the message with BBCODE, just click on the VISUAL button to see what the message looks like. If you edit your profile page, you can select which button you want as the default, but you will always be able to switch between the two editors by clicking the buttons on the bottom left when composing your messages.

the only thing i don't like is how narrow the actual forum area is and how small pictures are now.
