This past week my wife and I had quite an experience with a Barn Owl owlet. There is a nest that we have located, and visit from time to time that has two owlets. On our last visit we noticed that only one of the owlets were visible. Not thinking much of it we were ready to move on when we noticed the fully downy owlet on the ground by our feet. Not knowing the proper way to respond we called a couple local raptor centers for assistance, but ran into after hours canned messages. One thing was clear after some internet searches was this owl given its down needed intervention. We watched the parents feed the nest, but not locate their lost offspring. Eventually, after calling a 24 hour line of FWC a local animal control unit was dispatched, who was able to work with the local fire department to get this owlet back to its high nest. I'm happy to report that after the efforts of the local authorities this owlet is alive and well, and was immediately welcomed back by its parents and siblings. Hope it lives a long life, and says hi once and a while when we visit.
