Florida Softshell Turtle digging a nest. Nesting takes place between mid March and July in central and southern Florida, and in June and July further north. There is a possibility for females to nest 2 to 7 times in one season, laying up to 225 eggs per year. The nest is dug with the hind feet and from 9 to 24 brittle, white, spherical eggs are laid per clutch with the incubation period being between 56 and 80 days. After nesting, females often scratch and churn the ground as they move away from the nest, this helps to draw predators away from the actual nest.
