So I was out laying a track for the bloodhounds to find me today. While I wait for the hound I'm always checking my surroundings for things to photograph (with my phone). I saw several of these "sticks" with rings of thorns. There were no leaves on any of them.....some were around 6' tall, others 2-3' tall. What are they?

It may be Aralia spinosa, commonly known as devil's walking stick, sometimes called Hercules' club, prickly ash, or prickly elder. They lose their leaves in winter leaving behind a trunk with large thorns looking like a spine covered walking stick.
