This post is related to the recent Board: Wildlife from other States and World wide and Post from Gris titled "would have been so easy". In that post Ira and I discussed the tick eradication program which was started in the very early 1900's and ran until 1962. The tick eradication program required cattle to be run though dipping vats containing a solution of arsenic. The 2 dipping vat photographs depicted here were constructed on or before 1932. They are located in somewhat remote areas but are easily accessible by foot. Salt Lake WMA Cattle Dipping Vat Tosohatchee (South) WMA Cattle Dipping Vat

I'm really serprized that these Historic Cattle dipping vats have survived all this time. 1932 was a long time ago.

There are still quite a few dipping vats around the link will take you to a pdf listing all of the ones that are known .... www.dep.state.fl.us/waste/quick_topics/publications/wc/cattlevats.pdfThere is a dipping vat that is dated to 1906 in the Tosohatchee WMA located at the historic site of the Beehead Ranch. Interesting enough, I have read that the ground/earth at these sites is quite possibly contaminated with arsenic. There is a dipping vat in the Hal Scott Preserve (off of SR520 and adjacent to the Wedgefield Development) that is completely fenced in with a very high chain link fence.

Thanks Frank, I have looked around Toso South WMA for them, but never found them. Do you know anything about the old panel truck in an oak hammock just off main road?

The dipping vat location at Toso South is shown on the attached photo. It is located on the east side (your left when walking in) of the fire road approximately 1/4 mile from the parking area. It is maybe 20 feet from the road but may be heavily covered in debris. The van is also located back in the woods in the same area. There was a ranch in that location over 70 years ago. You can see evidence of this in the attached 1943 aerial photograph. Van is located at 17R 0509278E 3138242N
