Like a lot of our ponds Ollies Pond is drying up and the larger fish that usually were inaccessable to the birds are getting forced into small areas. White Pelicans raft feeding end up getting some that would normally be able to avoid them. These large Tilapia are a problem for them. Particularly with their fan of spikes along the dorsal. Here is another one whose pouch was being perforated.

I have never seen a White Pelican capture a fish so large that it's pouch was being perforated. What happens to the Pelicans after the pouch is perforated? Does it heal or does it lead to the death of the bird? I read a news article about someone who intentionally cut the pouch of Brown Pelicans and Florida wildlife officials said it was a death sentence for the birds.

I doubt if it heals. It needs to be put to use too much to rest. In this case, there is probably enough for it to keep fishing. If it were badly slashed it couldn't hold anything and the bird would starve.
