The Brevard Zoo needs your help in tracking the rare Diamondback Terrapin turtle.
Diamondback terrapins are unique turtles who live in brackish coastal habitats, like our local Indian River Lagoon and are easily identified by the distinctive spotted pattern on their light colored skin. There are seven subspecies of diamondback terrapins that live along the Atlantic coast from Massachusetts, down into the Florida Keys and around the Gulf coast to Texas. The Florida east coast diamondback terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin tequesta) is the subspecies found in the Indian River Lagoon. Our local subspecies is found only from Volusia to Miami-Dade counties and little is known about their current population health. You can help by reporting sightings of diamondback terrapins in the Indian River Lagoon using their online reporting form Diamondback Terrapin Sighting Report Pictures and GPS coordinates are especially helpful!
